After three lockdowns, working from home and now being faced with an awfully cold winter, it’s no surprise that the must-have hairstyles for this season are fuss-free. No complex up-dos or faffing around with plaits this winter, instead it’s all about getting the right cut for your face shape.

A great fringe (or bangs, as they call them over the pond), is a look you’ll be seeing a lot of over the coming months and an easy one to try yourself. Of course, not literally by yourself - step away from those scissors unless you’re hoping to go viral on YouTube.
Winter is a great season to try out a fringe as there’s less of that sweaty forehead, stringy hair fiasco to deal with. And, unlike previous years, the trend is to keep a bit of texture in your fringe, so there’s no need to flat iron it into oblivion.
Top tip: try using a powder foundation or setting powder on your forehead if you have naturally oily skin. This will prevent any excess oil from being absorbed by your fab new fringe.
The Shag
The shag is coming back in a big way and is one of the ultimate low maintenance styles, particularly if you have unruly hair. This edgy style consists of a thick fringe and blunt, choppy layers, cut as high as you dare. Go full eighties shag (bordering on a mullet) with the shortest layers positioned above your ears, or keep it more modern by layering only the bottom few inches.
Texture is key with a shag haircut, which is what makes it such a versatile style for those with curly or wavy hair. However, even those with pin-straight hair can rock a shag by using a quality salt spray or texturiser.

Bob’s Back
Is the Shag a little too much of a style leap for you to get behind? Don’t fret. Bob’s got your back. Blunt bobs are très chic right now, with a welcome low-maintenance twist. In previous years, a stylish bob cut consisted of razor straight edges and shiny, perfectly straight hair. Not this season, Satan.
The AW21 version is the same general shape as bobs of old, but with added texture through layers or waves. What this means for you is that the cut itself does the vast majority of the work, keeping daily styling to an absolute minimum.
When your hair is still wet, apply a texturising mousse, flip your head upside down and scrunch your hair up toward your roots. Voila, the perfect wavy bob.
90’s Layers aka “The Rachel”
With Friends back on our screens, a whole new generation are being introduced to those nineties starlets for the first time. And with that, comes the reintroduction of a hairstyle you may have thought was passé - think again. “The Rachel” is back with a vengeance, with celebrities such as Selena Gomez making it their own.
The modern Rachel cut features choppy, face-framing flicks, achieved with a blow dryer, barrel brush and curlers. If you think that sounds like the opposite of a low maintenance hair routine, you’d be right. But if you didn’t get an opportunity to try “The Rachel” in the nineties, now might be your last chance.

Big, Bouncy, Blow Out
Last on our list is another style that takes a little more time but is worth it for the glamorous results. Channel your inner seventies badass with big, bouncy waves a la Farah Fawcett. Long, loose curls that are swept back from the face are hot this season, and again, have a little more room for imperfection than the original look.
This year’s blow out focuses on creating a more natural look by using your fingers to break up the curls, instead of aiming for perfectly coiffed spirals. Use large curlers or a blow dryer to achieve loose curls, then set them in place with a strong hairspray.
