Ready to dive into the world of eyelash extensions? Semi-permanent lashes are a great way to cut back the time it takes you to apply a full face of makeup and can help make your eyes really pop!

It’ll be super-important that you know how to look after your lashes properly if you’re going to get the most out of them. So, before you take the plunge, read our guide to lash extensions and get familiar with the procedure and maintenance.

Before you make the appointment

Before you book into your local salon, do a little research and figure out the best place to go. It might be worth travelling further for more professional treatment.

Look for a salon that is experienced in the application of individual lashes. Individual lashes often look more natural than strip lashes, as they can be applied to suit your unique eye shape and size. Applying individual lashes takes skill, which is why it’s so important you find a therapist you trust.

How long do eyelash extensions last?

Six to eight weeks on average, but you’ll need to care for your lash extensions properly to get the most out of them!

Choosing lashes you love

Everyone’s eyes are different, which means some people can take full, thick sets of eyelash extensions and others might feel better with a more subtle finish. The lash style you choose will depend on your personal preference and style as much as on your eye shape, and it’ll help to make the decision before you reach the salon.

To see how different thicknesses and lengths will make you feel, try on a selection of false eyelashes before your appointment. If you’re nervous or new to the world of semi-permanent eyelash extensions, we recommend you start with less. Even just a few individual lashes can make a huge difference to the way you look!

You’ll also want to consider the type of eyelashes you choose. There’s plenty out there, from natural-looking silk to more dramatic synthetic mink. If you’ve chosen the right salon, you’ll be able to decide what’s best with your therapist before they start.

Making changes to your skincare routine

If you usually use an oil-based makeup remover, mask, or moisturiser, you’ll need to rethink your skincare routine once you have your eyelash extensions applied. Oil in skincare will break down the glue that holds your extensions in place, so can make them come away more quickly than they otherwise might.

You’ll also need to be careful not to damage your lashes when you’re removing eye makeup. We recommend using a gentle cleanser and a cotton pad to remove your eyeshadow and mascara and remember to move in small outward strokes to avoid messing up your extensions.

How to get eyelash extensions off without damage

If you want to take your eyelash extensions off at home, there are a couple of ways you can.

Pick up an eyelash extension remover online or from your salon and brush the formula into your lashes. Wait for a few minutes, then brush the product through again. Repeat this until all your extensions have slipped off, then clean the eye area with a gentle eye makeup remover.

You can use coconut oil instead of a professional product. Simply brush or soak your lashes using a cotton pad and wait for the extensions to slide off.
